Demystifying The College Admission Essay Genre
Demystifying The College Admission Essay Genre Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. As I pour the masa harina, I cannot help but think about how much it resembles my journey to America. When I moved, I brought my Guatemalan heritage with me into the massive bowl that is the United States. Continuing with the recipe, I gradually add water to the masa harina and knead it until it becomes the desired texture. Assimilating into American culture and the American way of life was no easy feat for me and I struggled at first, but I found ways to manage. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. Conventional academic assistance is something you can always get here. And it matters a lot since you are likely to do it regularly. With a little help from our experts, you can apply to several graduate schools and have decent chances of succeeding. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. Although my parents were not fluent in English, I was able to learn English with the help of Dora the Explorer, Barney, and my surroundings. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. Nothing thwarts the obnoxious rejection letters like their expertise. Sign up to receive emails for events, news, info sessions, and other admission related information. Finally, I extend my hesitant arm to pick up the pack of masa harina and proceed to pour it into the bowl. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another personâs outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I donât necessarily have to find validity in everyoneâs viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. âThese people are just confused,â Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, âLet people be who they are.â Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult.

Honor Scholar Program Admission Essay Prompts
Honor Scholar Program Admission Essay Prompts This mistake shows that you donât care enough to proofread your application. Admissions committees might forgive a typo, but they donât like to hear that you wish you were going to school somewhere else. Next, use a few detailed examples to show the skills you have, such as leadership, rather than using lots of different ones. In the conclusion, make a statement on your main theme without repeating yourself. DONâT try to sound âacademicâ or give the âwhat they want to hear.â DO write what only you can write. (âI am⦠I was⦠I have beenâ¦â) DO use active, interesting details. Donât be afraid to ask for help on wording and style either, just make sure that your voice is always the one being heard, not your proofreaderâs. Colleges can tell when you werenât thinking about them specifically as you wrote your essay and were just casting a really wide net. Especially if you put the wrong colleges name on the essay! DONâT use too many exclamation points- you want to seem passionate about something, but exclamation points are informal, and too many can seem overly frivolous. The more you enjoy your subject matter the easier it will be to write the essay. Donât write about a person without spending 2/3 of the essay focusing on how that person shaped youâ"specifically. Each essay should focus on different qualities and events, and should help you become 3-D for the admissions officers. 2) Make sure you know what you want the college to know about you before you decide what story to tell. Read the prompt before, during and after you write your draft, then ask someone else to tell you whether or not you responded to it. Colleges are not looking for the next Ernest Hemingway or Toni Morrison. You will sound smart when you use your own words and your own voice to tell a genuine story that shows who you are. Get too much help. There is a fine line between asking someone you trust to review your essay and getting too much help. Come back the next day with a fresh eye and go over it. You will be able to streamline your line of thought that way so you can fit into word counts. Do tell a great story that communicates some unique qualities you offer a college. I read and review essays for a living and my students tell me the insight is invaluable. DO make sure that your own personality shines through. Colleges look at the personality of each student as well as their qualifications. This is your chance to show them who you are, not just what youâve done! When your mom, dad, teacher or tutor starts giving you words to use or edits too much, your voice disappears. The application essay is not a résumé, nor is it an epic. They also donât expect you to have survived trauma or carried out heroic feats by your senior year in high school. So always represent yourself in the best way possible, but make sure you keep that depiction truthful. Now that you have decided on the story that you want to tell, the next logical step would be to write it. DONâT just talk about why the school is a good fit for you. DO talk about what you plan to contribute to the school, and why you are the perfect candidate for it! DONâT send it off without having someone else read it first! Do tell a specific story that grabs the readerâs attention. Donât focus on a negative event or a struggle without spending more time on what you learned or gain from it? There arenât too many things you can do to ensure rejection, but plagiarism, also known as cheating, is one of them. If you use a thesaurus to find words rather than trust the words you know and use every day, you will not sound like yourself. Whatâs more, you might use a few big words incorrectly, which will never impress an admissions officer.

What Are Some Dos And Donts For The Admissions Essay?
What Are Some Do's And Don'ts For The Admissions Essay? Alfred Prufrockâ and learned ancient history from the ancients themselves, we pursued an underlying philosophical thread, examining our readings through the lens of courage. I still have the battered schedule, which I kept in my pocket. Almost every morning I visited the campus bookstore. I bought a copy of James Joyceâs Dubliners, which I managed to snag some downtime to read. At some point, after reading it, I felt like Sophie as I wondered about my beliefs and values and about the world. In my St. Johnâs story, we are not only discovering adventure, but we are uncovering meanings, dimensions, countless wonders, questions, and even some answers. The night is young, the tea is still warm, the interest is fresh. Later that night, we will still be there, night old, tea cold, but the interest will never fade. The night is loudest when at its quietest, and as I lay there, closing the last page of the book, I will fall asleep knowing tomorrow is a new day, a new adventure. I dove into Aristotle and Thucydides while my dog investigated the nearby smells. Every evening, I ticked off the days on the calendar, counting down to the day I would fly from Michigan to Santa Fe. Not more than two years later my literature teacher gave me as an extra reading the book Sophieâs World by Jostein Gaarder. The book accomplished its objective and, with ease and short chapters of many philosophers, introduced me to the world of the big questions and the pursuit of truth. Everyone in the classes spoke, not to the professor for the sake of a grade, but to each other for the sake of the exercise. On a Saturday halfway into my first semester at Smith, my friend and I went in search of a study room. We visited three academic buildings that afternoon. Trying to single out any one appealing aspect of St. Johnâs is, for me, like trying to pick a favorite piece in a jigsaw puzzle. Some pieces might be more aesthetically pleasing than others, but none of them can compare to the whole picture. However, the classes were the part of the Summer Academy that stuck with me the most. While the authorâs words may be constant, the reader is the true variable. When you have more than one reader together, you have each dimension they bring to the book . I canât say that any one of these factors stands out as a single attraction of St. Johnâs. Rather, itâs the combination of them all that makes St. Johnâs such a uniquely appealing college. Almost without exception, every room we peeked into was packed with those little chairs that Will Ferrell squeezes himself into in Elf, the ones with the little writing shelf attached. On a philosophical basis, I chafe against the competitive, individualistic approach to learning that these desks represent. On a physical basis, at six-foot-two, I can barely fit behind them. St. Johnâs college not only interests me, but draws me in very strongly because it combines in the most natural way, the study of politics and philosophy. Although there are no majors or concentrations in St. Johnâs, I feel that the Great Books curriculum was created to perfectly suit my interestsâ"approaching the social sciences with a philosophical lens. When a book is read, a bond forms between author and reader. The author speaks, and the reader listens as they weave together the holes the author leaves them to fill. I took far too many photographs of the displays in the New Mexico History Museum, and I brought home a beautiful little red rock from the hike we took nearby. I recall my afternoon arrival at St. Johnâs in a blur of adobe buildings, warm placita bricks, and inviting, clean sheets. The next morning, when I woke up, I walked out onto the balcony of the second floor of the Murchison dormitory. I sat down at the plastic picnic table and breathed in the crisp morning air. I watched the sienna hills tinged with gold in the east as the sun slowly revealed itself. I was never able to portray the view quite as I saw it. Once Iâd calmed down a little, I decided to prioritize the readings required for the class. I downloaded the rest of the course selections and printed them out. In the weeks leading up to my departure, I trekked to the nearby field with my dog and my books, and I sat at the picnic table overlooking the woods.

And donât solely rely on your computerâs spell-checker. Leverage your native culture, traditions, and experiences. If youâre an international applicant, Native American, or otherwise non-traditional student, donât try to âAmericanizeâ or âmainstreamâ your application. The goal is to stand out and not appear to be like all the other applicants.

Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay
Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay With the right information, realistic time management and good proofing and editing, it should be easy to write the best college essay you can. One of the most common mistakes on college application essays is students trying to fit in too many key messages into a short essay. Arguably the most difficult part of the US college application process is the admissions essay, or personal statement. It's also the most exciting part, because it's your chance to show admissions officers your personality. They should never be more than one factor in an admissions decision. Low scores should never be a veto on a studentâs life. Having listened to hundreds of admissions officers, school counselors, parents, and students, and after reflecting on my own experience, I believe there is a healthier model to prepare young people to excel. There are durable ways to invest in children that will help them thrive in college and beyond. The crazed pursuit of college admissions helps no one thrive. Give the admissions officer a picture of who you are and the type of college student you would be if they offer admission. The essay should be more than words on paper or a glowing example of writing skills; it should be your story. But if youâre looking for someone to tell you that your essay is great as is and those six spelling errors are perfectly fine, well, youâve come to the wrong place. Weâd be mortified if a student of ours submitted essays with grammatical errors to college. Now that doesnât mean our students canât submit fragments. It doesnât mean our students canât start sentences with âandâ or âbut.â We love it when our students write in a colloquial tone. And while the Varsity Blues admissions scandal shines a light on families that break the rules, itâs time to consider the unhappiness of families that play by them. While competition for seats may be inevitable, students scramble to do ever more to get into collegeâ"and give away more of their childhood to do so. This competition might seem a problem only for middle class and wealthy families. But students of modest means suffer most when applying to college becomes an endless list of tasks requiring time and other resources. From MITâs point of view, ninth grade is a safe harborâ"a year to change your mind, to try different things without regard to your track record. These three shared features are all about intensityâ"not just participation in college life, but active engagement. They require students to move beyond merely doing something and toward becoming devoted to something. They require a depth of commitment that will serve students well throughout their lives. And yet nearly nothing in the admissions process tells students that these are the keys to their success. We strongly suggest you not listen to this particular advice of Mark Sklarow, a man who has openly defied the very bylaws of the organization he leads. Well, for starters, who uses paper and pen these days? Students should have confidence that if they practice their math and reading skills, they will improve, which is exactly what we are seeing when students practice for free on Khan Academy. Students should take an exam once and, if they donât like their scores, practice and take the test once more. If they still donât like their scores, we should offer many other ways for them to show their strengths to admissions officers. MIT recently revised its application to include only four spaces for extracurricular activities, and admissions officials there are evaluating whether they can move to three. Brilliantly, the school also removed the space for students to put any activities from ninth grade on their application. The essay creates frustration for students, stress for parents, and an overall feeling of dread as the deadline for submission approaches. The essay, however, doesnât have to be an insurmountable project.

Constructing an Identity James McBride and Richard Wright - Literature Essay Samples
The world is full of predispositions that favor the majority and hinder minorities. James McBrideââ¬â¢s memoir, The Color of Water, and Richard Wrightââ¬â¢s autobiography, Black Boy, both address the disadvantages that minorities face. In these narratives, Ruth McBride, James McBride, and Richard Wright are all surrounded by ignorant people who pressure them to conform to stereotypes. However, these individuals are able to combat the ignorance and construct their own identities using the power of education and knowledge. Through the growth of the characters in Black Boy and The Color of Water, it is evident that education is the key to self-discovery. Ruth McBride is an immigrant from Poland, and she faces the pressure to conform to both her parentsââ¬â¢ traditional ideologies and the standards of the American South. Ruth is considered an outcast by other whites in Suffolk, Virginia, because of her Jewish heritage. As a result, she is better able to identify with the African-Americans in her town, and she enters into a relationship with a black boy named Peter. Unfortunately, due to her own familyââ¬â¢s racism as well as the popularity of the KKK, Ruth is forced to see Peter in secret. Ruth becomes pregnant with Peterââ¬â¢s child, and because such a pregnancy is deemed socially unacceptable, she is discreetly sent to New York City to live with her aunts. In describing Suffolkââ¬â¢s oppressive community, Ruth states, ââ¬Å"It was always so hot, and everyone was so polite, and everything was all surface but underneath it was like a bomb waiting to go offâ⬠(McBride 184). Ruth learns the value of hard work and self- reliance because she is never afforded the luxury of sympathy, and she later passes her values of open-mindedness and education on to her children. Thus, Ruthââ¬â¢s new sense of self compels her to marry a black man despite her familyââ¬â¢s threats to cut off all ties with her; it also drives her to convert to Christianity because, unlike Judaism, Christianity was never imposed upon her. Ultimately, Ruth is able to create her own identity by rejecting her familyââ¬â¢s biases as well as her familys religion. As Ruthââ¬â¢s biracial son, James McBride struggles to understand his own racial identity. When James is a young boy, his mother sends him to school in a Jewish neighborhood in order to grant him the best education possible, but as a consequence, he is subject to racial prejudice and begins to resent his motherââ¬â¢s race. One of Jamesââ¬â¢ early pressures to conform to a stereotype arises when his classmates urge him to dance; while he wants his classmatesââ¬â¢ approval, he is torn because he knows that dancing for them would perpetuate the notion that all blacks can dance. After the death of his stepfather, James goes down a slippery slope by skipping school and turning to drug use and crime. When Ruth finds out about his bad behavior, she sends him to live with his sister in Louisville, Kentucky. There, James meets the corner men, who embody the dead-end life James would lead if he continues down his current path. Although James befriends these men, he realizes that he needs to work hard and educate himself in order to escape their fate. It is only after completing his education that James feels compelled to research his motherââ¬â¢s past, and in doing so, he is able to accept both parts of his heritage. He states, ââ¬Å"I felt like a Tinkertoy kid building my own self out of one of those toy building sets; for as she laid her life before me, I reassembled the tableau of her words like a picture puzzle, and as I did, so my own life was rebuiltâ⬠(McBride 292). Although James has never been able to fit in with his motherââ¬â¢s race, the knowledge of her past is essential for the construction of his own identity. Throughout Richard Wrightââ¬â¢s life, his identity is defined by his determination to escape the cycle of poverty. Hunger is such a prominent part of Richardââ¬â¢s childhood that it is present in all of his early memories. As a child, he is hardly able to attend school because he must earn money in order to provide for his family. Despite the fact that his religious grandmother believes that stories are evil, Richard develops a love for reading, which shapes his personal philosophy and motivates him to create a better life for himself. After reading H.L. Menckenââ¬â¢s A Book of Prefaces, he states, ââ¬Å"I had once tried to write, had once reveled in feeling, had let my crude imagination roam, but the impulse to dream had been slowly beaten out of me by experience. Now it surged up again and I hungered for books, new ways of looking and seeingâ⬠(Wright 249). Although his ascent from poverty continues to be an uphill battle due to racism and prejudice, Wright uses his reading as momentum to build his own identity. Therefore, Richard Wrightââ¬â¢s reading is the basis for all of his beliefs and accomplishments. Overall, the individuals who figure prominently in The Color of Water and Black Boy are able to overcome societal expectations through education and hard work. Ruth, James, and Richard all realize that they are not limited to the identities that are handed to them. There road of ignorance leads to a dead end, while the road of knowledge leads to infinitely many destinations. Works Cited McBride, James. The Fight For Women s Voting Rights Essay - 1810 Words
On a busy city street, people clear the way for the thousands of women marching down the street. They are dressed in all white and bearing flags and banners that read the words, ââ¬Å"Vote for womenââ¬â¢s suffrage,â⬠or ââ¬Å"Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?â⬠Floats are also seen on the street, holding women of all different ages, sizes, and races. Scenes similar to this one were not uncommon in cities across the nation during the battle for womenââ¬â¢s suffrage. The fight for womenââ¬â¢s voting rights was no short-lived battle. Since the beginning of civilization, the lives of men and women have been different and unequal. While there have been hundreds of prominent female figures throughout history, it is common knowledge that the womanââ¬â¢s job was considered to be taking care of the household. Women have always fought to be treated more equally, and throughout the years they have made great steps. Cultural Relativism Essay Research Paper The thesis free essay sample
Cultural Relativism Essay, Research Paper The thesis of meta-ethical cultural relativism is the philosophical point of view that there are no absolute moral truths, merely truths relation to the cultural context in which they exist. From this it is hence presumed that what one society considers to be morally right, another society may see to be morally incorrect, hence, moral right # 8217 ; s and wrongs are merely comparative to a peculiar society. Therefore cultural relativism implies that what is # 8216 ; good # 8217 ; is what is # 8217 ; socially approved # 8217 ; in a given civilization. Two statements in favor of cultural relativism are the # 8216 ; Cultural Differences statement # 8217 ; and the # 8216 ; Argument from the virtuousness of tolerance # 8217 ; , the following essay will look at and measure both of these statements. The cultural differences statement goes like this ; # 8216 ; Different civilizations have different moral codifications, therefore there is no 1 correct set of moral claims, merely those that conform to the major set of beliefs within the given civilization # 8217 ; . We will write a custom essay sample on Cultural Relativism Essay Research Paper The thesis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page First I am traveling to look at James Rachel # 8217 ; s ( in # 8216 ; The Elementss of Moral Philosophy # 8217 ; , Ch.2 ) analysis of this statement, and secondly I would lie to give my appraisal of the statement. Rachel # 8217 ; s argues that this statement is non logical, as the decision does non follow from the factual premiss. The premiss makes an averment about differences in moral beliefs. The decision makes an averment about the nature of moral facts or truths. In general, he argues, one can non presume anything about what is or is non true about the universe, from premises about beliefs about the universe. A civilization may believe that the Earth is level, but believing so doesn # 8217 ; Ts make it so ( nor does belief that the Earth is circular make it so ) . Nor does dissension over the form of the Earth imply that there is no definite form. This unfavorable judgment is non assuming that the premiss on which the cultural differences statement is based on is false, instead that the truth of the premiss can non vouch the truth of the decision. Rachel # 8217 ; s claim that physical facts are independent of beliefs about those facts is non justified. We neer have entree to the physical universe apart from, or independent of, some scientific or conceptual model. There is no # 8220 ; position from nowhere # 8221 ; which we can utilize to find whether our opinions about the universe are true or non. Moral facts are similar. In both instances the truth or falseness of a claim can merely be evaluated against the background of some conceptual model or another. It is in this regard I believe that Rachel # 8217 ; s statement can be criticised. I would wish to add a personal unfavorable judgment to the cultural differences statement. The statement presumes that a moral action within a given society is right every bit long as the society condones the act. I believe that this given is faulted given that, as history has frequently shown us, certain societies have been forced, or manipulated into, excusing and transporting out certain Acts of the Apostless on behalf of the governments within the society. The most common illustration of this would be Hitlerââ¬â¢s powerful influence over Germany during World War two that led the state to brutal freaks such as the Holocaust. A possible solution to this job, I believe, would be to add a simple comment to the statement ; ââ¬ËDifferent civilizations have different moral codifications, therefore there is no 1 set of right moral codifications, merely those that conform to the major set of beliefs within the given civilization, given that the beliefs are non forced upon the given cultureââ¬â¢ . The statement from the virtuousness of tolerance is the following statement in favor of cultural relativism that I am traveling to look at. The statement states that: # 8216 ; meta-ethical cultural relativism promotes tolerance of different cultural moral beliefs, therefore we should accept this point of view, as it is the lone meta-ethical place that promotes tolerance of cultural differences in moral beliefs. # 8217 ; This statement lies on the premise that because it is the lone meta-ethical place that promotes tolerance one should therefore follow it. I believe that this premise is flawed in that a individual should non follow something merely because it has one favorable facet that is non offered elsewhere. Take for illustration if a scientific theory offered a solution to an unresolved job that had non been attempted before, but lay on a scientifically impossible premise, one would evidently non accept this theory in explicating the phenomenon. I believe this is the same for the statement from the virtuousness of tolerance, as one should non accept the statement merely on the virtue that it is the merely in its field to advance tolerance. The thesis of meta-ethical cultural relativism, in my position, is neither right nor incorrect, merely flawed. I believe that certain moral beliefs within different civilizations are justified due to the context in which they are in. I besides believe though, that absolute moral truths do be, and can non be judged right or incorrect because of the context in which they are in. In general I believe that a society should be in such a manner that promotes the being of that society, and exists in such a manner that is good for the well being of its members. I believe that certain civilizations can be judged right or incorrect if they act in such a manner that does non continue its being, but on the other manus I believe that we must esteem the civilizations of others even where some beliefs do non populate up to our criterions of # 8216 ; right # 8217 ; and # 8216 ; incorrect # 8217 ; . Cultural relativism is a construct for much argument, my essay has looked at two statements on the affirmatory, viz. the statement from the virtuousness of tolerance and the cultural differences statement. Although the statements are deficient to turn out cultural relativism as a cardinal philosophical truth, they do supply grounds for many people to see themselves # 8216 ; cultural relativists # 8217 ; , and therefore give the construct a great trade of virtue in meta-ethical philosophical surveies. 32d
